the Community Foundation for the people of Kirklees.
There are some 1,800 Community Foundations around the globe, each one providing services to donors and investing in local communities. We are a member of UK Community Foundations, the national network for all accredited Community Foundations across the UK. The network is responsible for distributing £77 million of funding annually, and together has endowment funds worth over £580 million.
We are the Community Foundation for Kirklees.
Last year we awarded over £1,000,000 to local charities and community groups.
In the past 11 years, we have awarded a total of £2,100,000 in grants aid because we’re passionate about Kirklees. We care about the people and places, we want all communities here to thrive, for people to be happy, healthy and live fulfilled lives.
The community foundation model is placed-based. This means that grants are distributed differently depending on the specific needs of the community. Place-based funding works on the principles of community engagement and collaboration. Its success as a model is contingent on longevity, relationship building and being able to leverage local philanthropy to address local problems.
Over time we have developed an expert understanding of the issues in an area and how best to deliver funding to tackle them. We do this by:
For One Community Foundation, no place or neighbourhood is “forgotten” or “left behind”. Our understanding of the need isn’t shaped by stereotypes, preconceptions, or assumptions about our locality, rather it is shaped by over a decade of listening, learning, and living in the places that we operate.
We seek money from people who want to make an impact and we award it to community and voluntary groups who need it. We champion local giving, building partnerships with like-minded organisations and individuals who care about the communities on their doorstep.
Every year, we award grants to hundreds of charitable organisations in Kirklees. Working with our donors we use our research and expertise to invest in grassroots projects, funding fantastic ideas that enable our communities to thrive. Grants range from £500 to £10,000. We fund what our community needs.
In 2010, following the success of several Community Foundations across the UK, One Community Foundation Kirklees was established. Initial financial support came from Kirklees Council, West Yorkshire Police, and the NHS Trust.
Since then we’ve distributed over £2 million locally, benefitting thousands of people and we continue to support projects, services and activities reaching some of the most deprived communities in Kirklees. Our endowment fund has grown to £1.5 million providing a legacy for communities.
One Community is a registered charity (Number 1135258) and a company limited by guarantee (Number 07100811). Our constitution ensures that we are governed by members who elect the board of Trustees.
One Community is part of a network of Community Foundations that operate across the UK. That means that we have common standards of good practice (see attached our sample policies), and are accredited by the United Kingdom Community Foundations, and approved by the Charity Commission.
