The causes of food poverty are complex. For people with low financial resilience an unexpected life event can quickly spiral into financial crisis and food poverty.
In in many cases food poverty is caused by a combination of factors, including:
- Financial issues: such as low income and benefits delays
- Access to food: distance to shops, transport issues, quality of food available
- Skills/knowledge: cooking, nutrition
Locally Hope Newsome Food Bank have been able to provide support to 3,196 people with food and essentials thanks to a grant from the One Community Foundation
Paulette Paul from the food bank says “Food parcels were made for the families and individuals in our community who needed extra support with food due to the loss of jobs, shielding, vulnerable and elderly. Hygiene packs were also put together consisting of soap and shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste, flannels and razors”.
