At One Community Foundation, we know that small, local grants can deliver significant impact when they’re invested in the right places. We recently had the opportunity and privilege to see this in action during a visit to Cowcliffe Community Recreation Area, supported by our Thornton Family Fund.
Seeing the space first-hand made that impact clear. What stood out wasn’t just how much the area has changed, but how effectively a relatively small amount of funding can be used when it’s put into the right places.
Real Change
Since 2020, they have transformed what was once an underused and poorly maintained park into a beautiful, valued space. With support from this funding, the area now includes:
- Restored green space for recreation
- A community food-growing area
- New planting to encourage biodiversity and year-round use
- Improved access, including new paths and woodland steps
For local residents, the difference is visible. It’s now a safer, greener and more welcoming place, one that the community clearly takes pride in.
The Power of Partnership
A key strength of this project is its partnership with the West Yorkshire Probation Service. Through the Community Payback programme, people on probation have played an active role in maintaining and improving the park.
This creates mutual benefit: participants gain skills, confidence and improved wellbeing, while the community benefits from a well-maintained space and positive contributions that help shift perceptions.
It’s a strong example of how community projects can support wider goals around rehabilitation, inclusion and community safety.
A Lot from a Little
From a single grant, the project has delivered:
- Engagement with approximately 2,200 people
- Support from 20 volunteers
- Around 2,000 volunteer hours
These outcomes demonstrate how community-led initiatives can generate significant value. Funding like this creates vital opportunities for people to connect, through activities, shared learning or simply spending time together, which helps turn short-term projects into legacies.
More Than Just a Park
Today, the park is a place for people to connect, unwind and get involved. Events such as the annual “Party in the Park” bring residents together, while ongoing activity helps maintain momentum.
There is also a growing sense of shared ownership. During the visit, it was great to see tools made available for local use, enabling residents to actively contribute to the space’s development and upkeep.
